SDN Solutions for Datacenters

As cloud computing is firmly established as the standard for Service Providers and Enterprises, more are moving services to cloud-computing platforms.

Our Engineering Team has been working extensively on solutions for Datacenters: There is a challenge on how to achieve that technological step that allows the operations to upgrade the ecosystem within a holistic framework that includes both infrastructures, network, and services in order to achieve the necessary agility that modern data centers require.

In this post, I would like to focus on the Cisco SDN solution for Datacenters, Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure known as Cisco ACI.
This solution will enable us from the most common, such as having a CLOS topology with predictable transmission times, no matter how big or how much our Datacenter can grow as well as the possibility of interconnecting different Datacenters and be able to extend virtual services transparently and have Active-Active services with total normality;

This solution relies on a VxLAN market standard chosen by most manufacturers at the moment, and the big difference here (if you have had to configure solutions of this style manually, you will better understand the value!), is the automation out-of-the-box that provides the solution to do this.

Then we also have the advantage of its Multi-Tenant operation and its support in layer 3 to provide redundancy and contingency in case of failures for the solution, here relying on IS-IS.

Cisco ACI solution overview

Moving away from traditional networking is where we will have the greatest flexibility when it comes to advancing technologically as it has a controller for the management of the solution, which Cisco has called the Application Policy Infrastructure Controller commonly known as APIC, which It will give the possibility of integrating within the DC via API’s against third-party networking solutions or what is mostly one of the main benefits, which is its integration with the server and/or services virtualization platform, as the big players like:
– VMware vSphere solutions
– Microsoft Hyper- V
– RedHat KVM or OpenStack
– Containers solutions.

As the main differential point, the Cisco ACI solution that is an object-based model will allow us to position ourselves with a DC ready to be automated or orchestrated so that we are ready for both network operators and for the scalability of the solution in case of growth on-demand.
We will have the possibility via API and based on JSON or XML programmability, to make configuration changes and become a more dynamic DC due to the interaction with countless existing solutions on the market that we may need for our service solution in the DC, both internal and external offer, single-tenant or multi-tenant
